Our Story
Our Founding Principals
In 2013, the International Perinatal Stem Cell Society, Inc. a non-profit (501(c)(3) organization was founded on the basic principle that stem cells from perinatal tissues contain enormous, untapped life potential to treat many diseases and disorders. Perinatal stem cell sources include: amnion, amniotic fluid, cord blood, cord tissue/wharton’s jelly, as well as placental blood and placental tissue. Perinatal stem cells are formed around the time of birth and are classified as adult stem cells but they really are more primitive then stem cells found in bone marrow or adipose tissue or other traditional sources of adult stem cells and as such, have greater therapeutic potential.
Creating a Society of Cooperation & Partnership
After editing Perinatal Stem Cells (Wiley Press, 2010) and Perinatal Stem Cells, Second Edition (Wiley Press, 2013), the founders of the Perinatal Stem Cell Society wanted to build on the success of these books and to create a robust society of cooperation and partnership that will advance the use of perinatal stem cells from the bench to the bedside. A third book co-edited by society founder, Sean Murphy, and titled Perinatal Stem Cells: Biology and Clinical Applications was published in 2014 (Springer Press). The fourth Perinatal book is due to be release in 2018.
Our Growing Influence in the Regenerative Medicine Community
As the society has grown, so has our profile and role in the regenerative medicine community. We continue to embrace our growing role. One of our biggest successes was that in support of the REGROW ACT, legislation to promote stem cell treatment advances that ultimately passed as part of the 21st Century Cures Act, the Perinatal Stem Cell Society was able to gather over 35,000 signatures and presented these signatures to members of congress along with over 700 pages of comments urging action and a Yes vote.
We Organize World-Class Scientific Conferences
As a society, we will continue to organize world-class scientific meetings and are planning our 2018 meeting at this time. We are also forming an industry leadership group to develop voluntary standards for the industry to abide by in order to improve the quality through self-regulation.
