Current/Future TherapiesWharton’s jelly is a relatively new source of stem cells and currently there are no clinical trials underway using this cell source. However, there are an amazing number pre-clinical animal experiments underway with the goal of gathering sufficient data to move this cell source into the clinic for a vast number of indications. Scientists studying Wharton’s Jelly stem cells are fortunate to have a clear regulatory path already outlined and paved for them by bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. As a result, WJSCs should have a clear path to the clinic in the next one to two years. Since these cells can form adipose tissue, bone, cartilage, skeletal muscle cells, cardiomyocyte-like cells and neural cells and are very amenable for tissue engineering, gene therapy and regenerative medicine, the future is almost unlimited in regards to therapeutic potential.
