ReferencesCord Blood Transplantation, in which a patient receives cells from a donor (allogeneic use), has been a standard of medical care for over 20 years. According to the WMDA there have been 14,000 cord blood transplants worldwide by the end of 2009. Recently two leading scientific journals celebrated this 20th anniversary with commemorative issues. The use of cord blood stem cells for regenerative medicine, where the patient relies on his or her own cells to repair the body (autologous use), is undergoing research and clinical trials. The Parent's Guide to Cord Blood Foundation maintains a database of these treatments, and by the end of 2009 there were over 200 worldwide. This website provides an excellent resource for some of the landmark papers focused on cord blood transplantation.
